1x1 is a project documenting and celebrating an extraordinary retirement gift for Albert LeCoff, co-founder and Executive Director Emeritus of the renowned Center for Art in Wood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The gift itself is an incredible collection of “miniature” wood artworks made as a thank you from the community of wood artists he helped shape over more than 40 years. Because of the personal nature of the gift, we wanted to allow friends, patrons, and collectors to experience this impressive collection in a small package.
Conceptually, 1x1 (of which we conceptualized and named), is a practical and obvious title, drawing attention to the tiny size requirements asked of each artist (1 inch cubed). It is also more than that, illustrating how to build and grow a community: one by one. This double meaning carries its significance throughout Albert’s career, as well as this project, which includes branding, a book (in both standard and limited editions), a poster, website, and silent auction.
The branded mark (shown below) intentionally distorts the visual line between two- and three-dimensions and is the only digital contribution included in the collection of objects.
The design of the book is as simple as it is elegant, allowing each work of art to shine at its miniature size while showing its unbelievable details. The limited-edition book has a handcrafted, die-cut red folder that houses the book along with 50 original artist signature cards. The poster arrives carefully folded in a 6.5-inch square, matching the size of the book.
